I have always loved to dance since I was a kid. Listening to upbeat music always got me in the mood to move. Even though I was dancing for fun, I always seemed to get attention at parties even though I did not want it at first. I danced to all types of danceable music like rap, pop, merengue and dance music.
I started getting into the breakdance style of dance when I saw it on TV around 1998. I knew it was for me when I saw the type of moves that the amazing bboys were pulling off. Once I started practicing breakdancing, I was hooked! Listening to the different styles of breakdance music allowed me to think of different moves. It gave me the power to do new moves and try new styles. I even started incorporating gymnastics into breakdancing to spice it up a bit. Listening to high energy breakdance music will allow you to build up the courage to do flips. It took me forever to build up the courage to do a back flip. I first started in a foam pit and finally I can do it on a hard floor.
There are two genres that most breakdancers dance to: old school hip hop/rap and funk. Some breakdancers, especially when practicing power moves, like to listen to breakbeat, drum & bass, techno or trance. The old school hip hop genre is the original music that breakdancers listened to. To learn how the term breakdancer came about is to examine the true first word breakdancers were called…b-boys. The “b” stands for breaker. These were people who would dance during the breaks of a song when the voice would cut out from the song.
